Our vacation planners will make Peru a little bit yours

Lima, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, chewing cocoa leaves, and cuy. What is cuy again? That’s right, cuy is guinea pig. It’s fried or grilled and served whole, with feet and head intact. Yum.

If you don’t feel like gnawing away on a guinea pig bone, you should still come to Peru to experience all the other adventures this unique country has to offer.

If you start your journey in the coastal capital of Lima, you have the perfect base for a number of excursions. From here you can continue down the coast and enjoy the awesome, world famous Peruvian surf spots. Mancora is a surfing hot spot and one of the best beach towns in the country. Here are tuk-tuks, colorful beach bars, amazing ceviche and waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. And the water is pleasant all year around, so you can leave your wet suit at home.

If you want to see as much as possible in a short time, a good tip might be to jump on a bus from Lima to Cusco. The trip, often called Gringo Trail, can be as short as three days and two night with including overnights at hotels or B&Bs. Or you can choose to make the trip longer in order to see even more attractions. Do longer stops where you want to spend more time and jump on the next bus, or the one after that.

One recommended stop is Paracas, a town particularly known for the beach El Chaco and “The Red Beach”. The contrast between the red sand, the orange desert and the blue ocean is one of the most beautiful sights in Peru. Once you here you should make time to see the uninhabited Ballestas Islands, also known as the poor man’s Galapagos, the home of sea lions, pelicans, dolphins and Humboldt penguins.

Another recommended stop is “The Oasis of America”, Huacachina. This little town is built around a natural source of water and its in the middle of the desert. While here you can bathe in the water, said to have therapeutic qualities, and you can try what most people come here to do: dune buggying or surfing the endless sand dunes.

Next you won’t regret spending time in the second biggest city in Peru, “The White City” - Arequipa. The city is surrounded by three volcanoes, it has a city center with white baroque buildings, a pulsating nightlife and it’s popular with adventure travelers. Lima is ten times the size, but Arequipa is a giant when it comes to food. The city is known for its traditional, local food, fusion restaurants and has been in the forefront when it comes to putting Peruvian cuisine on the map.

If you want to see Titicaca, you can stop by the city of Puno located right next to this impressive lake. One of the biggest tourist attractions in the area is Uros, which are man made lakes made of totora reeds. The lakes date back to the inca civilization and today several different tribes are still living on the islands.

The advantage of traveling by bus, in addition to getting to much more, is that you’ll get acclimatized while driving. If you fly directly from Lima to Cusco, you’ll be at risk of getting altitude sickness because of the end stop being located at 3,399 masl.

Last stop is the old inca capital Cusco, Peru’s most popular city for tourists. It has a bunch of ruins and museums, but is also the best place to be for exploring the Andes and Sacred Valley.

This is also the starting point for one of the greatest adventures South America has to offer, the Inca Trail. It is a 42 km (26 miles) long hike along the Peruvian countryside, into the Andes via Sun Gate. The trip takes 4 days and 3 nights, and even though the surroundings on the trail is fantastic, the end goal is the absolute highlight. As you are getting closer to the end, you can start to see the iconic ruins of Machu Picchu rise in the horizon with the sunrise as the backdrop. It is a sight even the most experienced traveler will ever forget.
